I’m Flicking Past News Stories Like Men on Dating Apps

            Sapphire Allard

I am almost certain every poet
I follow has written the line
‘the world is burning’.

Do they realise it’s flooding just as much
or should I say something?

It’s hard to know what’s real these days.
I met my husband on one of those apps,
now he’s in the garden talking to our daughter
about a dead wasp.

He says the word ‘dead’ so lightly,
as if it were any other adjective;
‘heavy’ perhaps, or ‘rainy.’

I wipe my eyes. Soak my hands
in the washing up.
