Self-Care

            Jen Feroze

She has been wondering
whether it’s possible
to be only a little bit hit by a car.

Nothing that would mean metal pins,
or the moving or removing of internal organs, no,
nothing dramatic.

A dark orchard of bruising.
A nice clean break
and something in plaster.

She would be expected to lie low for a bit,
to be under a blanket
and motionless.

There would be hot tea,
messages with kisses, lasagnes
covered in foil and left on her doorstep.

The plates that were so precariously
spinning for so long would not smash
around her injured feet, there would be

a sudden forest of hands
to take them from her, tenderly.
They might even say she was brave.
