Kaja Wojtkowska
Not even September and already
the chestnut trees are shedding leaves,
littering pavements with dried brown crisps.
The thistles have grown wild white hair
on their heads, releasing their seeds into the wind
like mothers sending children away to school.
The balsam flowers retreat into tightly-pursed lips
as if tasting something sour, then spit
their small black seeds when touched, bursting
and flinging them out into the far future,
invisible from where I stand.
Kaja Wojtkowska is a poet based in Manchester. She is currently working towards an MA in Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her work has been published in The Dawntreader, The Gentian, and From the Lighthouse.
