‘When you feel too much / tears fall like rain / til there’s nothing left to
say’ – ‘Tears Like Rain’ by Collide
After the tears – which are not like rain,
but the kind of flood that could carry you away
for good – there should be quiet.
(Quiet like the lovely stain
the sun leaves
on a church floor.
Or a winter tree alone
with the pale sun. A heart
eased by birds singing.)
Instead, there will be words,
which will not be enough,
or even the right ones.
The evening blackbird calling
from the dripping sycamore
will sound like one thing to you
and something else to me –
a breach, a rupturing,
like love falling under its own weight,
like the way we say goodbye to water.
