Flowers are so expensive

            John Osborne

‘Half price for sad people,’ says the sign on the window
and the queue goes all the way down Unthank Road.

To make their money back the florist charges double
for happy people and the happy people don’t mind,

they haven’t really noticed. They are too busy
looking forward to yet more beautiful moments.

‘I don’t feel sad or happy,’ I explain to the nice florist,
‘so I guess I’ll just pay the normal price.’

The florist says that’s how she feels too, and tells me
about her daughter who is fine in Leicester.
